JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Bret Schundler, who won the Republican primary for governor in 2001 but lost the general election, will announce Monday night that he plans to try again in 2005, his spokesman said.
Schundler, who lost to former Democratic Gov. James E. McGreevey, is the second prominent Republican to announce he will seek his party's gubernatorial nomination in as many weeks. Businessman Douglas R. Forrester, who lost a bid for U.S. Senate in 2002, announced last week that he will run for governor.
Among Democrats, U.S. Sen. Jon S. Corzine and acting Gov. Richard J. Codey are considering runs but neither has announced his candidacy so far. Recent polls put Corzine ahead of all prospective candidates from either party.
Monday night's expected announcement from Schundler was not a surprise. He has stated his intention to run again in 2005 in interviews and with a Web site, www.bret2005.com. He also has raised about $400,000 for the primary so far, and filed his first Election Law Enforcement Commission report as a gubernatorial candidate in October, said his campaign spokesman, Sal Risalvato.
