Poll: Americans want Roe V. Wade upheld
WASHINGTON - A majority of Americans say President Bush's next choice for an opening on the Supreme Court should be willing to uphold the landmark court decision protecting abortion rights, an Associated Press poll found.

The poll found that 59 percent say Bush should choose a nominee who would uphold the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. About three in 10, 31 percent, said they want a nominee who would overturn the decision, according to the poll conducted for the AP by Ipsos-Public Affairs.

"While I don't have a strong feeling about abortions personally, I wouldn't want the law overturned and return to the days of backdoor abortions," said Colleen Dunn, 40, a Republican and community college teacher who lives outside Philadelphia.

The preference for Supreme Court nominees who would uphold Roe v. Wade could be found among both men and women, most age groups, most income groups and people living in urban, suburban and rural areas. Fewer than half of Republicans, evangelicals and those over 65 said they favored a nominee who would uphold the abortion ruling.

13. Not just Republican women
I couldn;t tell you how many women have answered when I asked them to square their vote for Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II with the Republican goal of making abortion illegal with, "They would never do that".

20. There are pro-choice Republican women, just as there are Republican gay
men and women.

They think that they can work within the system. And, I suppose, they provide a token of "big tent" to the party to attract young professional who think that government is bad (except, of course, when it is expanded during a Republican administration)

28. Because they feel confident Roe v Wade is safe.
No one really thinks it will be repealed, so the Republicans get it both ways. They pander to the anti-abortion crowd, while the moderates take it for granted that they are just pandering. It's a political free lunch for the Republicans.

...William Rehnquist was? It was about only 30% who knew who he was. Ignorance is bliss.

23. Goes to show that the vote for president is a personal one
ie, who would I rather have a beer with?

Democrats would do well to pay attention to this anti-rational tendency in the electorate.

In various areas across the country (Wisconsin, Montana, Colorado, etc), Democrats won handily, but Kerry lost.

"Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion"

RwV didn't legalize abortion. It was legal in a lot of states already.

8. Kinda makes you wonder if the election was stolen.
We always have the clear majority on the issues, but somehow the voter can't figure which Party reflects his personal interests best? Too counter-intuitive for my brain to grok.

17. Yup, nothing is as it seems: First exit polls were deemed unreliable
Then all we heard from the presstitutes until this point is that people voted on morals. Now they just got around to telling us that a clear majority wanted Roe v. Wade upheld then voted against the person who had promised to do so!

Coincidence? I think not.

10. Roe v. Wade will be gone by the next election
Timeline:

mid-2006: there will be 3 new Scalia-like clones on the USSC.

late-2006; Some Red State will test the waters by passing a law banning abortion. Lawsuits will be filed within minutes of the law's enactment.

late-2006-2007: Bill wends it's way thorugh the courts.

mid-2008: the USSC hears the case.

October 2008: USSC repeals Roe v. Wade--right in the middle of the presidential campaign.

11. Framing the debate
Got this tip from George Lakoff's article "How to Respond to conservatives" http://www.rockridgeinstitute.org/research/lakoff/howtorespond

"Suppose he brings up abortion. Raise the issue of military rape treatment. Women soldiers who are raped (by our own soldiers, in Iraq, or on military bases) and who subsequently get pregnant presently cannot end their pregnancies in a military hospital, because abortions are not permitted there. A Military Rape Treatment Act would allow our raped women soldiers to be treated in military hospitals to end their rapeinduced pregnancies. The wedge: If he agrees, he sanctions abortion, in government-supported facilities no less, where doctors would have to be trained and facilities provided for terminating pregnancies. If he disagrees, he dishonors our women soldiers who are putting their lives on the line for him. To the women it is like being raped twice — once by a criminal soldier and once by a self-righteous conservative."

25. Critical thinking failed once again
This attitude reminds me of the Fair Labor Standards Act * pushed thru to redefine overtime pay. Now I knew of some Pugs who were working like hell to get Chao and Co. to back off some of the provisions, but Bush made Chao push them through anyway. Well, you know who the Pugs voted for this election....and now Congress is constantly fighting Bush to back off on the provisions, which shouldn't have been there in the first place.

Same thing here with reproductive freedom. It's one thing to assume one can work with the system when the system appears to be flexible and non-authoritarian. But this is not the system we are dealing with.

27. The American people will get
exactly what they voted for. They should have bothered to inform themselves a little before they voted, but now they're just going to have to live with the consequences. I include in their number, the ones who didn't bother to vote at all.

I feel bad for the Kerry voters who will have to live with the consequences of the Bush voters choices.

33. Is that a backlash I see on the horizon?
It's things like this that keep me hopeful for the future. If * appoints hard-line pro-lifers and Roe v Wade is no more, a lot of moderate, pro-choice Republicans will be upset. But if * fails to deliver the promises made to the theocratic idiots that put him back in office, their wrath should be at least ten-fold over the anger from the moderates. Looks like a lose-lose situation to me!

In the meantime? We're all fucked. May as well get used to it.

Perhaps the problem is these people are not yet fucked enough, or have difficulty understanding how fucked they already are. Let's see how far it has to slip before they show up at the polls to support their latent desire for single-payer healthcare and civil liberties.
