GENEVA - The Iraqi Red Crescent has established a relief center in Fallujah, Iraq (news - web sites), but continued fighting between U.S.-led forces and insurgents makes it impossible for doctors and nurses to move around and treat the wounded, the international Red Cross said Monday.
The Red Crescent found a city still under siege three weeks after coalition forces launched their offensive against Sunni Muslim insurgents on Nov. 8, said International Committee of the Red Cross spokeswoman Rana Sidani.
The intense fighting that marked the U.S.-led assault to root out insurgents has abated as American forces spread their operations to other parts of Iraq.
But, Sidani said, "There are many civilians who are still trapped in the city and don't dare to come to the Red Crescent office."
