Second Sunni Cleric Gunned Down in Iraq
http://news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=3792849

~snip~

Masked gunmen today assassinated a Sunni cleric north of Baghdad, police said – the second such killing in as many days.

Sheik Ghalib Ali al-Zuhairi was a member of the Association of Muslim Scholars, an influential Sunni clerics group that has spoken out against nationwide elections to be held on January 30.

Al-Zuhairi was shot as he was leaving Thiyaba Mosque in the town of Muqdadiyah after dawn prayers, said Col Raisan Hussein. He was taken to Muqdadiya Hospital where he later died. Muqdadiyah is about 57 miles north of Baghdad.

A day earlier, unknown gunmen assassinated another prominent Sunni cleric in the northern city of Mosul – Sheik Faidh Mohamed Amin al-Faidhi, who was the brother of the group’s spokesman.

1. You don't suppose the US had a hand in it, do you?
Even if this is just part of the prelude to a coming civii war, its convenient to get people like this out of the way, i.e. if the elections are going to happen and legitimize the puppet regime we installed.

let freedom reign.

5. I tend to agree ...
The obfuscation and outright lies are piling up so fast with regard to the Iraqi occupation, one needs wings to rise above it. :(

4. Allawi made it clear yesterday...if you speak out against the elections
Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 06:51 AM by maddezmom
you are an enemy of the state. How many more assassinations will there be?? :eyes:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We went to Fallujah and we broke their back," he said. "We found enough weapons there to destroy an entire country."
He said that because of the success in Fallujah, "those who will try to obstruct democracy and election are finished. ... They don't have a safe haven anymore."
Allawi also criticized the Sunni association, accusing some of its members of inciting violence.
"Those who call for violence will be dealt with by force. The judicial system also will deal with those who allow themselves to stoke hatreds," he warned. "I hope that those who call themselves the Association of Muslim Scholars rise to the standards set by Islam as a religion of love and tolerance."
9. This is the doing of Allawi and the CIA
Only our media is to cowardly to even allude to it -- and obviously no one cares, not even our own Dem representatives in Congress.
Allawi is just another Saddam, but with the military might of the US to back him up.
16. I would say wait and let the full story come out but I don't think it
will. I think we all would love to see democracy established in Iraq. But democracy needs secularism. Saddam was secular but look at the force he had to use to keep things somewhat secular.
It wouldn't surprise me if these gunmen were Shiite, trained by the US.
19. More killings
Iraq is a dangerous place and the Sunni supported insurgents have been busy bombing and killing other Iraqis. This assassination may be the work of the Shites who are in the majority -- were repressed under Saddam -- and are going to win a majority in the elections. Prominent Sunnis who are vocal in their opposition to the elections may want to avoid answering the door. Too bad for this cleric, but shit happens in a country on the brink of a civil war.
24. Well, it would be nice for the friends and family of *all* the
deceased persons in the Sunni Triangle be given a more definitive explanation of what happened to their loved one other than, "Shit happens." Damn, that reminds me of senior officers dismissing something that wasn't important to THEM. No gig on you but the term "Shit Happens" to explain killing is just "UnSat!" ;)
