Company Launches JFK Assassination Game
Edited on Sun Nov-21-04 06:14 PM by khephra
GLASGOW, Scotland -- A British company said Sunday it was releasing a video game recreating the 1963 assassination of President Kennedy.

A spokesman for the president's brother, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., called the game "despicable."

The Glasgow-based firm Traffic said "JFK Reloaded" was an educational "docu-game" that would help disprove conspiracy theories about Kennedy's death. The game is due to be released Monday, the 41st anniversary of the shooting in Dallas.

Traffic said the game challenged players to recreate the three shots fired at the president's car by assassin Lee Harvey Oswald from the Texas School Book Depository.

I LOVE violent video games and movies. I'll defend games like Grand Theft Auto till the cows come home. But they're only fiction. This is too close to reality (like that one Army recruitment FPS) that this pushes even my buttons.

Truly disgusting!

24. My husband showed me the site
I had your same revolted reaction but he said it was created to help disprove the Warren Commission. The idea is, try and shot him as this one lone gunman from the 6th floor. Can't be done. That was the thrust of the site.

I think this follows on the heels of a Coast to Coast George Noory show about possible theories of how JFK was shot, who did it and so on. It was on Thursday night.

42. No, it's meant to DISPROVE the conspiracies
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/11/21/kennedy.game.reut/index.html

The release of "JFK Reloaded" is timed to coincide with the 41st anniversary of Kennedy's murder in Dallas and was designed to demonstrate a lone gunman was able to kill the president.
<snip>
Ewing said the game was designed to undermine the theory there was some shadowy plot behind the assassination. "We believe passionately there was no conspiracy," he said.
<snip>
Points are awarded or subtracted based on how accurately the shots match the official version of events as documented by the Warren Commission, which investigated Kennedy's assassination.

Top funny bloke Kirk already did an interview for me, but when he got whift that I was on the prowl for interviewees again, he wouldn't leave me alone until he forced me to ask him the following

GM: Kirk, you must be extremely pleased with the heeyuge success of State of Emergency. Have you been working on creating concepts for other games since then?
KIRK: I'm delighted with the success of SOE and of course I have been working on other game ideas, although my overwhelming desire is to make a 3D porno flick, provisionally titled, "CUMMINATCHA!"

I'm talking about the FPS that was put out by the army as a recruitment tool. It was called "America's Army" or something like that.

I wonder how truthful their statement on "disproving" the conspiracy theories is. I downloaded the demo, and even though it only works in passive mode - no shots allowed - watching the motorcade approach the repository at a slow pace for a good seven or eight seconds as if begging for a clear frontal shot gave me a weird feeling. As I remember, that was one of the questions - why would Oswald have waited until the motorcade turned the corner?

26. If It Accurately Simulated the Mannlicher-Carcano With a Bent Sight...
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 05:46 AM by AndyTiedye
...that was supposedly used in the assassination, that would be quite
educational. The government's top sharpshooters couldn't replicate it
with the actual gun in the condition it was in, and even after they fixed the
sight I don't know if they could do it.

But he was using MAGIC bullets. :wtf:

The game might also allow the assassin to choose a Mauser rifle,
which is what was originally reported as the murder weapon.
When question were raised as to how a marginally-employed person
like Oswald could afford such an expensive rifle, the story changed,
and a Mannlicher-Carcano, with a bent sight, was presented as the gun
that killed JFK.

Would it also allow him to choose the grassy knoll?

28. Depending on how versatile the simulation is, it could be a useful tool
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 06:08 AM by 0rganism
For instance, if it allowed one to put a shooter at any of several points proposed by the various theoretical explanations, and had an accurate ballistics and kinetics model for the resulting wounds, it could be used to test the alternatives. One wouldn't really need to have a "FPS" view, of course, all that could be automated, and one could run Monty Carlo simulations against minor variations in timing, position, bullet behavior, etcetera. Then, maybe one could try out multiple-shooter theories, with these "assasin bots". Of course, one would need a way to automatically compare modeled outcomes to the real event. The production company could host a challenge to achieve the set of initial parameters that most closely reproduce the result, and we might end up with something worth discussing in the end.

Hell, someone's probably already done this much. Sounds a little bit like constructive work, tho, and without the fancy ultra-violent graphics very few people would be interested in the results.

...it's called Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000. Later versions of MSFS obviously lack the towers, and have the game coded so you can't replace the scenery at that location with third-party scenery restoring the WTC.

By the way, if anyone has an old copy of FS95 (the first one for Windows instead of DOS), get a look at the screenshot on the back. I can only imagine the reaction on 9/11, if someone from Microsoft actually looked over the old boxes...

32. This may get the Secret Service after me...
...but, many years ago, I was leading a programmer's forum at my local Amiga (remember them?) user group. In order to get SDKs, discounts on software, etc., we registered as an official Amiga developer with Commodore.

Every year, we had to re-certify our membership. As part of the application, Commodore required us to send descriptions of the products we were going to bring to market. Needless to say, we weren't going to bring any products to market, but we obligingly sent off a description of the group learning project we were working on at the time for the first couple of years.

By the time the third year came around, it was becoming clear to us that no one at Commodore was actually reading the descriptions of these works-in-progress. As a way of testing that theory, our application that year included two new "products." The most notable was Term Limits, a totally non-existent game in which the goal was to eliminate the President, Vice President, all members of Congress, and the entire Supreme Court. (I will grant that the plot-line placed this sometime in the indefinite future, when the sitting government had just outlawed civil liberties and installed itself as ruler for life...in other words, a scenario that we knew could never happen in real life.) In case you're wondering, the other "product" was a Centipede-clone shooter named Law Firm...I'll leave that one to your imagination.

Yes, we got our certification renewed. And, no, Commodore never contacted us about the specifics of our application... ;-)

I would rather err on the side of free speech. I don't think that there should be precedents set for using the law to block controversial media or graphic depictions of historical events, even something in astoundingly bad taste as this is. America is already too litigious. Widespread consumer rejection would be more effective.
