Bush might not address House
Advisers want to stay clear of heckling

Ottawa official vows `utmost respect'

TIM HARPER
WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON—The White House is leaning against having President George W. Bush address Parliament when he visits Ottawa, citing fears the U.S. president would be heckled during his speech.

No final decision has been made, but those involved with the planning of the visit (Nov. 30 and Dec. 1) want to avoid pictures on U.S. network television of a president being booed or shouted at as he embarks on a second term seeking warmer ties with allies who had cooled toward his administration.

The haggling over a potential speech is a sign of the wariness with which the White House views Ottawa after a series of rebukes from north of the border during the Chrétien years — and the damage done by MP Carolyn Parrish (Mississauga-Erindale), who was expelled from the Liberal caucus this week by Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Parrish has promised to hold her tongue if Bush speaks in the same venue where former New Democrat MP Svend Robinson famously heckled then-U.S. president Ronald Reagan in 1987.

2. They won't sign that loyality oath
so he won't take the risk of hecklers or people turning their backs to him. Such a brave little boy. Has to avoid rooms full of adults who are not under Rove's control. Four more years of speaking in hangers before a hand full of guys in military & under orders to be polite.

of the Australian Green Party became my heros that day. I sent both an email of appreciation and was very surprised when Senator Brown replied w/his own appreciation and graditude of the awareness of some Americans of what whistle ass truly is.

It was a day of cheer in this DU neighborhood!

6. Sorry Dubya, the evil that men do...
lives forever, the good (in your case, that is really questionable) is oft interred with their bones. (sorry Mr. Shakespeare for soiling a wonderful line). I am not the least bit surprised that junior doesn't want to take the chance of being heckled, after all, he has such a thin skin that he might just have a tantrum right there (wouldn't I love to see that on national television). What a wuss!

I'd actually prefer they arrest him and send him to the Hague for war crimes.

11. Why are they afraid of US networks showing untoward behavior?
Karl Rove's got the whole media locked down! It's not like any of this stuff ever shows up in the mainstream press anyway...(props to Olbermann for fighting the good fight).

I would pay good money to be in the front row of that one, though...if you've ever seen the British House of Commons, imagine something similar with a three-drink minimum and you'll get a close approximation of the Canadian HoC. Actual debate goes on in there, and it's not for the faint-hearted once they get worked up over something.

12. Bush seems to be concerned about the press of "World Opinion" ...
infiltrating into the American MSM. What a wonderful way to "pre-emtively" avoid reaching out to our good neighbors of the north.

We wouldn't want the "sheeple" to find out that the audiences of the Bush campaign were not representative of a "real audience"!

20. "Rebukes"!!!!
"The haggling over a potential speech is a sign of the wariness with which the White House views Ottawa after a series of rebukes from north of the border during the Chrétien years — and the damage done by MP Carolyn Parrish (Mississauga-Erindale), who was expelled from the Liberal caucus this week by Prime Minister Paul Martin.

"

There were plenty of rebukes coming from the American Ambassador (Cerrucci(??)) toward Canada which set the tone of the relationship. Not to mention that El Chimpo broke protocol by not paying a visit to Canada right away after being sworn in.
Then he pissed off Chretien by being unprepared during a meeting and having to be shown where Prince Edward Island (About 350 miles from K-bunkport as the crow flies) was on a map.

Typical coward - he's all puffed up and feeling mighty when the bullying is done. When he has to face the people he's insulted he can't handle their ire.
What a sissy. What a little, little man.

23. MPs promise Bush will get a good reception
Debate continues to swirl in Ottawa over George W. Bush's upcoming visit to Canada -- about where he will speak, what kind of visit it will be, and how he'll be received here.

The newly re-elected President will visit Ottawa on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. "Part of a working visit can include an address to Parliament," Thompson noted, although she added that "President Bush seems to be reluctant."

"He hasn't said no yet, but there may be a fear he will be heckled. Ronald Reagan was when he came to Canada long ago, Thompson said.
As a result, Bush may opt for a different venue, with a more controlled and, almost certainly, a more receptive audience, Thompson says.

'Invite top People'

Reynolds suggested if there are any concerns about Bush getting an unfavorable reception, then the Martin government should take steps to avoid that happening.
