Radio Host Calls Rice 'Aunt Jemima'
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&u=/ap/20041119/ap_on_re_us/radio_host_remark_2&printer=1

A radio talk show host drew criticism Thursday after calling Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) an "Aunt Jemima" and saying she isn't competent to be secretary of state.

John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM in Madison, said in a phone interview Thursday that he used the term on Wednesday's show to describe Rice and other blacks as having only a subservient role in the Bush administration.

Rice has served as President Bush (news - web sites)'s national security adviser and was named this week to replace the departing Colin Powell (news - web sites) as secretary of state.

Sylvester, who is white, also referred to Powell as an "Uncle Tom" — a contemptuous term for a black whose behavior toward whites is regarded as fawning or servile.

Where was the outrage over Limbaugh's chocolate chip remark about Jesse Jackson joining Kerry campaign?

1. Rice and Powell considered 'sellouts' in Community
Well that is how Rice and Powell are referred to in the African American Community along with Clarence Thomas, Keith Blackwell and a few others.

4. Just because
There was no outrage over limpballs remark, doesn't make this right.

Racism is racism, bigotry is bigotry. It happens on both sides of the aisle.

21. Racism is racism. What about when Harry Belafonte said...
"There's an old saying," Belafonte began. "In the days of slavery, there were those slaves who lived on the plantation and were those slaves that lived in the house. You got the privilege of living in the house if you served the master... exactly the way the master intended to have you serve him.

"Colin Powell's committed to come into the house of the master. When Colin Powell dares to suggest something other than what the master wants to hear, he will be turned back out to pasture."

Because Belafonte is black, do we assume he was merely informing us of a view held by African-Americans, in general, about Colin Powell? Or is Belafonte a racist? Do we judge the person who would make such remarks to be a racist or simply a messenger, based only on the color of his skin?

I'm just asking because, in this case, we don't have any other information about the radio host except that he's white.

10. It's wrong either way.
Not all black people think alike. It's quite clear that Rice is just as hawkish as the rest of the Bush administration. Blast her for being a hawk and Powell for not doing the right thing. But to resort to using racist terms is stupid, on both sides.

15. doesn't change the fact that
Rice totally sucks and is incompetent and Powell is a fool and the black community knows this more than any group. While the phrasing of the statement was wrong the intent may be correct. The people of color in Bush's' administration do not represent blacks in America and they appear to be sucking up to the idiot.

14. This kind of bile shouldn't be repeated on DU
But whatever.

On one hand, it's important to know that crap like this is being said (and by a Dem? how sorry is that!),

but on the other hand by merely repeating it we're continuing to put the message out there.

Thanks for posting it. I'll be interested to see what responses this issue gets today.

17. A Black person could say this, but not a white person.
That's the fact. It's shameful and embarassing the role played by certain people. But there are always people like this--the Judenrat in the concentration camps who cleaned up the bodies of murdered Jews and acted as faithful servants to the SS, or the Black police chiefs in fascist apartheid South Africa who were rightly the object of scorn and hate. But white people must stand in alliance with oppressed people by targeting white chauvinism. Black people can point to the special treachery of certain people.

25. That was my first reaction.
I loved looking at Aunt Jemina's photo on pancake boxes and syrup bottles. (It never occurred to me as a kid that maybe it was a racist depiction.)

Rice makes me nauseous. She reminds me of a tick with a bad hairdo.

22. Actually, Sly is in Madison, and I think we INVENTED 'PC'
I'm thinking way back to when Donna Shalala ran the University of Wisconsin. That was the first time I recall any discussion about 'politically correct speech'.

Sly knows better. He's undoubtedly as angry about the election as the rest of us, and with Sly, it causes it mouth run on and spew whatever comes to mind. Not defending him, though. Can't.

26. It is Outrageous to speak of another in those racist terms..
and I don't care which side does it. I have no love or can I agree with much of what Rice or Powell, or Justice Thomas has to say for that matter, but I can't imagine ever referring to them or them refer to me in this sick way..

They have risen to their perches with some level of intelligence , the shame is that they are educated but seriously misguided.

I have taught my children as my mother and dad taught me, meaning we should never condone any bigot or racist no matter which color or hue that may be..
