U.K.'s Straw Defends Iraq Uranium Charge
LONDON (AP)

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on Saturday defended Britain's publication of a disputed charge that Iraq tried to get uranium from Africa, saying the CIA expressed doubts about the allegation but did not say why.

Straw, in a letter to the House of Commons select committee on foreign affairs, said Britain was unaware until recently that a U.S. envoy went to Niger to investigate the claim and found it could not be substantiated.

1. Begs the question: is Niger the country UK thought was approached?
I have seen nothing to confirm that UK was alleging Niger was the country.

2. This is too funny.

One nice big circle of lies.

White House/CIA: We didn't lie; we cited British intellegence and they believed it was true even though we knew it was not true.

British: WH/CIA never told us it was not true, we always believed it was true.

Blair is trying to save his ass. Bush is doing the same. Who goes down first. Ultimately, it won't matter as greedy bastards always do everything possible to save their own ass first. That will be the ultimate undoing of Bush.

4. Versus the CBS report saying that the CIA told them
...back last fall. Which as far as I know still stands.

See the thing is, they want the questions to stop. Just stop. Like they have before. But the meme has shifted. It's too much fun and there's too much already out there, and the simple fact that this story was BS has already become common knowledge. So all this does is keep it moving along.

You go ahead, Jack. Say something else profoundly stupid. We don't care. You're just putting more logs on the fire. Nice dry ones.

5. Straw must think we are all really stupid
If the Brits had additional intelligence, why don't they tell us what it was? If that intelligence is at all convincing, then all of us doubters would have to shut up. And Bush and Blair would be off the hook. I can only conclude that they don't have convincing evidence.

(Did everyone notice how Straw is downplaying Wilson's assessment. Sorry, Wilson was very convincing to me.)
