25. Pat's confusing mystery with ignorance.

Nobody taught birth control, certainly not school and not likely parents and/or physicians.

Planned Parenthood was not as established as it is today.

Unwed mothers were bundled off out of town and their babies taken away from them and adopted out, severing all future contact with them.

If you were unmarried and engaged in sexual relations, males got a free pass if not admiration. Females were "bad girls".

Girls tended to marry young in order to "legitimately" engage in sexual relations. Sometimes they didn't finish high school in order to marry.

Birth control was available to only married couples in many states. And the pharmacist was the gatekeeper to contraceptives.

Sexually transmitted diseases proliferated due to ignorance of the symptoms and pathology.

There was the absence, if not vacuum, of "mystery" if you were gay. You could expect to be beaten severely, threatened with public humiliation which included losing your employment and your family, and no hope for redemption in the community.
