The next Ronald Reagan was not on that stage last night.


The only person on that stage last night with the slightest possibility of defeating Barack Obama next November was Mitt Romney.


As Democrats, we should be wishing for the GOP to be colossally stupid enough to nominate a Herman Cain or a Michelle Bachmann.


When one of us says so, we invariably get nonsensical replies saying "I remember 1980" and "Carter wished for the same thing" and "be careful what you wish for".


Ronald Reagan was a successful 2-term Governor of the largest state in the union. He was a well-known, and well-liked, figure in Americana. He was also pushing a governing philosophy that hadn't been tried in 50 years, so the American people didn't know what a bad philosophy it was. They hadn't personally experienced it. It sounded good.


Every ultra-right conservative that moves ahead temporarily in the polls is not the next Ronald Reagan. Quit being afraid of your own shadow.

Herman Cain or Michelle Bachmann would struggle to get 40% of the national vote.

Rick Perry would struggle to get 45%.


I am very careful what I wish for. I wish for the Herman Cains and Michelle Bachmanns and Rick Perrys to stay viable in the GOP race for as long as humanly possible, to use their war chests to damage Mitt Romney as much as they possibly can.


... Because one of those people on the stage last night is going to be the GOP nominee. That candidate is, with 99% likelihood, Mitt Romney.


But I can still wish for the 1% to happen. I can wish for the most colossal mistake in modern two-party nominating processes. I'm very careful what I wish for.... and I wish for Herman Cain to somehow win that nomination.
