17. He is
He knows that he has not been re-elected to a major office, and that is a requirement to be taken seriously in the Repig party. Also, he's smart enough to know that Mitt's got the best chance of anyone out there to get the Republicon nomination, and that the fundies will vote third party for a snake-handler in the general election, rather than hand another talking point to the Mormon missionaries poaching their flocks.

He knows that the Rethugs are toast, but the public stands a reasonable chance of being tired of the Obama administration and everything in it by 2016, unless for some reason, they can pull it all together. If so, the Democratic Party might be able to squeeze out one more win (think the Reagan-Bush disaster of 1980-1992) and will be ready for a Repuke by 2020. Christie will only be 58 then, and if he hasn't croaked, he can sell the "well, they said Dick Cheney was going to die of a heart attack in 2000, didn't they?" line as a way to look past his possible health problems.

If he can wait until 2016 or 2020 for a real try, he knows he'll have advantages he just doesn't have right now, especially given the lateness of the start. He'll have four to eight years as a spokesman for the reich wing criticizing the Democratic Party, and that wlll endear him even further to the trogolodytes.

Besides, if he were offered the VP spot, he'd take it, and would vault him into front runner status for the next time.
