I have used both and have always found that the Mac was a better designed product. The domination of PCs over the years is not unlike the battle that took place between VHS and Beta. If you recall both the Beta and VHS came out at roughly the same time. The battle was on to see which system would dominate. It was clear to most people that Sony's product, Beta was a much higher quality system...but it was more expensive to the consumer. As is typical, the cheaper system dominated even though it was not the highest quality available. As a result we, the consumer had to tolerate something that was less than the best.
I look at the old battle between Macs and PCs the same way. IMHO, the Mac was far superior in quality and design...but they were more expensive. When it comes to price vs. quality, the consumer will always buy the cheaper product. It has taken years and years for the consumer to come around and realize that the Macintosh has always been the better product. Of course, Apple's success is largely due to other products.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to predict that computers of the future will be dominated by tablets. They will continue to improve and will also become cheaper as time goes on.
The reason why the iPad was so successful even though they weren't the first (by a long shot) is that the consumer has over the years begun to appreciate the quality of Apple products.
My only disappointment with Apple is their move to have their products put together overseas. It is a disappointment that is hard to put into words. I have always seen Apple as the "rebel" in the industry...that they would not follow convention. But alas, they have succumb to the temptation to do what everyone else has done. I am so disappointed that they decided to do that. I thought for sure that they would defy convention and remain a purely American made company. I even wrote to them about it...I was so pissed. I'm typing on a brand new iMac with all the buzzers and bells (almost got the tower) and it is disconcerting to know that it was assembled in China.
Shame on you Mr. Jobs.
