7. Nation despairs over purple prose, hackneyed metaphors, and hyperbole
A recent poll revealed that citizens in increasing numbers are becoming alarmed at the growing spate of cheesy psychological appeals to fear and negativity. Increasing their angst is the overwrought language ....

oh hell, you've got to be kidding me. The people of America remain in a form of semi-paralysis? Life has lost its meaning? Funny, I walked down Michigan Avenue just the other day and people, hardly paralyzed, seemed to be engaged in all kinds of things.

The long-term unemployed are most definitely having terrible problems these days (as any long-term unemployed person has in other times, only now their numbers are greater). Our sympathies should be with them and our efforts to help unstall this economy by any means possible should be at the top of our agenda. But this kind of over-the-top portrait of a nation of depressed zombies is ridiculous. Someone needs to be slapped.
