37. Arne Duncan is a dangerous mole.

He's no kind of Democrat, even of the DLC/Third Way type. He's not a Republican either; he's an unapologetic corporatist who is trying to destroy public education. From these remarks, he doesn't even believe in the validity of our form of government!

People, it's really, really damn big that someone so high up in a Presidential administration, Democratic or Republican, would feel comfortable saying these things. This "emergency manager" law is fascism. The "emergency manager" gets to set aside any or all elected officials and take full and complete control over any local government.

"Just go home," the Emergency Manager told the city council. "You don't have any authority anymore."

"We are this city's duly elected officials," one red-faced member nearly shouted. "We are the authority here, not you!"

"Not anymore." The smug almost dripped from the Emergency Managers words. "The law says I can set you aside and I have. No elected official in any city is safe; if they mishandle public money the way you all have, someone can come in and take control and that someone is me."

They all stared at him in disbelief. "We're just a poor town," one woman, the now-former city Treasurer, whispered. "It's not our fault."

"If you have a problem with it, you can change the law," he said helpfully. "But for now, get out of my office."

"Thrown out of my own office," one of them sadly said as they filed out. "Elected officials," another muttered.

The sounds of gun safes being unlocked and ammunition boxes checked was heard in most of their homes that night. One of them used the gun on himself.
