A Character Sketch: Republican Party Priorities

Just so we understand who we’re dealing with – and why it would be worth it to design policies that work instead of ones that cater to the opposition or expectations about public opinion – here’s just a sampling of stories about our new Republican overlords, who only control one branch of government but might as well control three.

First, they don’t want anything to do with job creation. That’s right out.

Essentially, House Republicans want to keep going programs essentially equal to a year’s worth of the entire budget cuts listed in the RSC document. As Eugene Robinson indicates, “The conservatives want to end funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the Legal Services Corporation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Energy Star program, the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change . . . you get the picture. Put together, these expenditures would not begin to pay for, say, the $13 billion Marine Corps landing craft that Gates plans to kill because we are no longer fighting World War II.”

Oh, and if they don’t get their way on spending, they will crash the full faith and credit of the US government.

And among the many enlightening measures that the Republicans are pursuing right from the start of their session in the House include killing all private insurance participation on legal abortions, and trying to stop gay marriage in Washington, DC.
