So that they have a means to label their opposition as "extremist".

That is all there is to it.

The "center" is, per definition, the "mainstream", i.e. that which "most people agree with". Who ever can claim the center can say they have the majority of people behind them.

Really no different than when the communists in Russia called themselves "The Bolsheviks", which means translated "the majority". That is the ironic part of it.
