5. Why bother?
You think of it as "backing down" but really it's like trying to argue with someone who still thinks the Earth is flat.

They only do it because they know it makes you and other liberals mad. Best thing to do is to just unfriend them. Don't even block them, just unfriend them. If they say anything about it just say "Sorry, you were just saying a bunch of weird stuff on there." and when they ask for examples just says, "I don't know it was just dumb" and leave it alone.

Seriously, imagine what you would do if you had someone write on your Facebook thing "one day bacon will rule the world!" and "I'm down with bacon!! fry me up a slice!!" and it was really annoying and just stupid. You have to think of them the same way. Would it make any difference to argue with someone saying these ridiculous things about bacon every day? No because they aren't rational. Same way with your Repube friends and family members. They're irrational. You can't win because it isn't about them being right or wrong, it's about them being loud.
