20. I asked the question because my children in their twenties use the
term broadly to include anyone who follows a counter culture lifestyle. This may cover anything from simply dressing the part (long hair, facial hair, alternative clothing style) to various living arrangements. Thus, my daughter who lives in a co-op and is gainfully employed as are the other residents refers to herself as a hippie. I maintain that hippies were a very brief phenomenon and that not every long haired person was a hippie even in the 60's. I tend to think of hippies as living day to day and sponging off other people. My definition would exclude people who formed communes and worked like hell.
