It's a tricky balance. There is so much detestable in Sarah Palin's politics and addiction to celebrity, yet she also provides ample opportunity for too many to air misogynistic attitudes that would be disallowed against other women. I try to avoid all Palin threads on DU, because I know there will be something in there that will set my teeth to grinding 100% of the time.

The phenomenon isn't much different from when various GOPers are unmasked as gay. People often use the occasion to unleash homophobia as if it were a sigh of relief, held in too long and demanding an outlet.

I wish Palin would vanish from our politics, but she does have a minor use. She often reveals as much about her critics as she does about herself (when she isn't telling various chains of lies). It's illuminating in its way.
