A lot of people actually believed him for awhile, but the Army CID investigation proved what he claimed was impossible.
I was a patient in the Army hospital at Ft.Gordon at the time, watched the whole thing on local TV news abd the Augusta paper. I really pissed off one of the Sergeant orderlies there-he believed the story, but gradualy came to see reality.

It was really a sad thing, and really upset a lot of Army families there.
