The canned variety is actually a relative of the butternut squash, and the two can cross-pollinate. It's called the "Dickinson field squash". The little "pie" pumpkins one finds in the grocery store are another variety.

I am glad I still have some of last year's crop in the pantry. I bought it on close-out. Had I known what I know now, I'd have bought a few more cans. One of my cats loves the stuff, so I have to share it. (He likes winter squash, too.)
