That being, placing great value on hierarchical control constructs.

So, no, it's not as though the people who are, per their experiences, distrustful of law enforcement officers, are simply reaching, or painting w/a 'broad brush' re their perceptions.

Besides, when it comes to defending authority figures, it's almost always done by those who have family members, or friends, who hold such positions who can dutifully be counted upon to insist the rest of us somehow have it all wrong on the matter. You know a good one, your brother, and that's all good and well. I, too, have had 'fair' encounters w/cops who, going by how they handled things, weren't the frothing, itchy fingered, hippie hating sadists that, say, Hunter Thompson, describes in his material.

In a rural county not far from here, where I'd been busted for possession many, many yrs ago, my band, back in the 90s, ended up throwing massive druggie/heavy metal parties on this farm that belonged to the bassist's girlfriend's parents, and local bands from around the upper midwest would caravan in ...and as uber redneck as the law was in that neck o the woods, they told us they wouldn't bother us at all (nevermind that most times they were outnumbered by well over a hundred) that they wouldn't disrupt things provided they didn't see anyone leave the premises. And you know...from what I recall they drove by on occasion, people smoking grass, tents and fold-down campers everywhere w/people dosed outta their minds on blotter acid, yet they didn't do a thing.

Now, there's a good example...although I've had some that, re the overall tone of the situation, were the exact opposite, too. So....
