21. Bush became President
It shouldn't have even been close. Palin's 'world view' is pretty much the same as Bush's and she's a much better speaker. he concealed his legacy boy resume with a down home folksiness that appealed to people who just weren't paying that much attention.

There are a lot of people out there who believe in the "democratic" (note small "d") idea that anyone can become president - regardless of merit. Sarah appeals to those "She's just like me!" people. And there are plenty of them out there. They don't care that her political experience was limited to mayor of a small town or a short stint as Governor of a state with a population smaller than San Francisco. They don't care that she quit. They don't care that she's not that bright. They don't care that she is unable to take responsibility for any of her failures. Plenty over people can identify with her rationalizations and sympathize with her victimhood.

People who like her are people like her. The feel victimized by __________ (insert word of choice i.e. the government, affirmative action, immigration, liberals, the media, etc.) "She's just like me!" has the potential to get Sarah the nomination. Whether or not it will be enough to win her the White House is another story.
