Being a law clerk does not equate to being someone's life long friend and soul mate

The late Presaident of Korea, Kim Dae-jeong, was a liberal and a man who organzied the pro-Democracy demonstrations in Korea and went to jail for organizing against against the coup and the late Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan worked tirelessly for the poor, spoke out against the wealthy corporations and for Democracy were both close friends of Robert Novak

Also, being wealthy hardly makes you suspect either -- FDR is probably one of the wealthiest men to ever be President.
