11. Just so you understand
No US State can give 'all the rights but the word marriage' because as long as the Federal Government defines marriage as heterosexual only, gay couples can not have many important rights, including the sharing of Social Security benefits and the filing of joint income tax returns, the portability of the legal relationship from one state to another, and so on.
As things are now, all of the rights reside in the word, so it is not 'just a word'. I have been told it is not that way in the UK. But it is here.
