laissez faire attitude toward gay rights in general since his inauguration. He appears to be unwilling to stand strongly for the concept that our gay brothers and sisters are equal to us "straight" folks.

Societal changes do take time, as you say. And they are changing in regard to gay rights, but what I'm arguing is that an eloquent and articulate President like Barack Obama who is christian and who professes to believe in equality for ALL Americans could influence the debate favorably IF he chose to do so.

I don't buy the "he's got a lot on his plate" argument as a good reason for him to be uninvolved. Of course he has a lot on his plate. He always will--because he's President. But he's chosen to show by his INaction that equal rights for gay Americans is not a priority for him. That is very sad and disappointing from someone who has been the victim of discrimination throughout his life and who pledged to work for equal rights for gays back WHEN HE NEEDED THEIR VOTES.
