When she went to Congo she overruled "the security fears of her aides" and traveled to "where hundreds of thousands of women have been raped over the past decade."

I read in one of her books about a trip she took to Mongolia as First Lady and she tried fermented yak's milk, a local specialty, to the horror of her physician, who immediately flipped out and started prescribing a bucketload of antibiotics for her.

I know she took flak for overselling how dangerous her trip to Yugoslavia was in the 90s, but it seems like she has a real appetite for jumping into the middle of dicey situations and disregarding her personal safety in order to find out what things are like first hand. The woman will not be managed and she will not be protectively bubbled.

I suspect she sees herself as some sort of roving badass for world peace. I can't say she'd be wrong to make this assertion.
