There is so much common ground that we assume as a matter of course between ourselves. Damn near all of it has to be tossed out of the window upon learning that my interlocutor doesn't so much as know who Dylan is.

I suppose my backup plan for common ground would be to conjecture that the person is (a) VERY young, and (b) from another country which (c) has close to no dealings with the US.

Backup common-ground conjectures can certainly be made, but they become very difficult to make for something that touches so many other things - especially if you limit yourself to non-insulting explanations.

In fact, all in all, it's more likely that the poster is simply lying.
