Take, for instance, this little beast on the LA Freeway:



Try putting this in downtown Paris or Berlin. They'd positively riot, but this kind of infrastructure is beneficial to American car and oil companies. It's why companies like GM routinely bought up and junked street trolley companies back in the 1940s and 1950s. They wanted to push people onto car dependency even though it meant higher out-of-pocket expenses for individual drivers.
