I think I've got it!

Because * has failed at everything he's ever attempted, from his baseball days to his ANG no-show, this is his way to erase all his failures. Do something SO BIG that he will be recognized after he's dead, and it won't matter to him whether it's positive or negative. And since there is no foresight in this cretin, he has no clue what his real life legacy might be once he is retired/fired/impeached/marched to the Hague (but he might always have Paraguay).
