we actually have pretty decent bike trails around here - in theory, I could ride a bike most of the way to and from work - the first and last mile or so would be on back streets.

However, I can't really imagine me being able to bike 12 miles to work...and then 12 miles back. That's a long ride, and I haven't been on a bike in years (unless you count a stationary exercise bike).
