Thursday April 5, 2007

At today's Pentagon briefing, Defense Secretary Gates used cautious, measured comments to describe current military "progress" in Iraq, warning that Americans will have to wait "several more months" before there could even be a prediction whether or not - maybe, perhaps - Bush's ridiculous "meet the old surge, same as the new surge" plan had any chance of working. Wow - not exactly the ringing endorsement Bush/Cheney/Rove have been exalting in their recent comments. What about all the so-called progress "on murders" Bush said Petraeus reported just last week? Gasp - he wasn't lying, was he?

On the sillier side of politics, while the Hillary/Obama race seems to have devolved into some kind of fundraising showdown, all the 2008 presidential races seem increasingly inane. Isn’t it "too silly too soon" for presidential races to stoop to this level of nuttiness? Critics of Mitt Romney argue that his hunting claims are “bogus.” Romney claims he’s been a hunter “all his life” but his aides can only verify two actual hunting trips. I’m no Romney fan, but is this really the best legitimate criticism of his fitness as a candidate? How about his alignment with Ann Coulter, isn't that a stonger offensive angle? Its almost as ridiculous as John Kerry’s unforgivable faux pas of ordering a philly cheese steak with swiss cheese instead of plain yellow American. He was accused of being too French. So is Romney a wimp because he hasn’t killed as many living creatures as Dick Cheney (as if any mortal could compete with Killer Dick)?

And are Obama’s credibility and qualifications less significant if he doesn’t rake in as much cash as Hillary? Or vice versa? Has our political system become nothing more than a glorified telethon? Do issues or platform or grassroots support mean nothing anymore? Are there more rhetorical questions in this blog than Rumsfeld spewed in 10 Pentagon press briefings combined? Probably so.

Forget “The Apprentice,” why not just get it over with, turn the primary elections into a reality TV show with the candidates competing in weekly fundraising stunts (car washes, lemonade stands, fast-food restaurant promotions). Viewers can vote for the favorites online or by dialing 866-numbers, thus narrowing the field to two frontrunners from each party. Finally, co-hosts Donald Trump, Simon Cowell, and Tyra Banks can decide at the end of the 12-week season who becomes the winner! Call it “America’s Next Top Candidate Idol!” Wouldn't that be eminently more interesting?

Bet Rupert Murdoch is already writing the theme song.
