As dawn rose Tuesday, the fourth anniversary of the United States’ invasion of Iraq, a congressional staffer arrived at his boss’s Lansing office to discover it had been rabidly vandalized.

Local peace activists said they understand why, but they don’t condone how.

By midday, the red paint on the windows of Rep. Mike Rogers’ eastside office had yet to dry, but the incident had already made international headlines. Blood red paint covered Rogers’ name on a sign at the front of the building at 1327 E. Michigan Ave. A paper sign glued to the window read, “Rogers there is blood on your hands.” Two outlines of bodies were spray painted on the sidewalk in front of the building, and gobs of gelatinous white glue lay on the sidewalk.

Rogers, R-Brighton, has consistently voted in support of the Bush administration’s Iraq policies, and his Lansing office is a frequent staging ground for anti-war protests.

Tony Baltimore, a spokesman for Rogers, said he received a phone call early this morning telling him the office had been vandalized. When Baltimore arrived, he found the locks broken and glued. In addition, the two exterior security cameras were destroyed, he said.
