Protecting us, and for any to say that they are, is telling an untruth. I will qualify this by saying that they are there because they are obeying orders to do so, and they are doing their jobs as best as they can. As to being heros? Heros require heroic action and there are some soldiers that are more heroic than others. One must never forget that there are things being done there, under orders that are criminal. ie..the use of napalm in Falluja, Abu Ghraib come to mind first.
