The Disposable American: Layoffs and Their Consequences
Louis Uchitelle

Louis Uchitelle talks about the economic and psychological effects of layoffs on the American workforce, the subject of his book, "The Disposable American." He argues that companies are laying off workers even when it hurts profits. Mr. Uchitelle compares today's job security with that of the 1920s and investigates why layoffs have become so commonplace. The talk was hosted by Politics and Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC. Includes Q&A.

Louis Uchitelle reports on economics, business, and labor for the New York Times. In 1996, he was the lead reporter for the Times' "Downsizing of America" series which won a George Polk award. Before working at the Times, Polk was the editor of the business news department at the Associated Press. He has taught at Columbia University and was a visiting scholar at the Russell Sage Foundation in New York.
