Troopers: New ATV Law Tough To Enforce

POSTED: 9:05 am EDT September 4, 2006
UPDATED: 9:08 am EDT September 4, 2006

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- State troopers said a new law restricting all-terrain vehicle use is going to be difficult to enforce.

Starting October 1, ATV use will be limited to daytime hours on unpaved roads at speeds less than 35 mph. It also mandates minors be properly supervised by a licensed driver.

But Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Lieutenant Mike Burroughs said with thousands of miles of dirt roads, the new law will be tough to enforce.

The lawmaker behind the changes -- Rep. Greg Evers -- said he's sorry if law enforcement disagrees. Evers said he just was trying to improve safety for young people riding ATVs.
