A Soldier's Promise: The Heroic True Story of an American Soldier and an Iraqi Boy

In "A Soldier's Promise" First Sergeant Daniel Hendrex recounts his relationship with Jamil, a young Iraqi boy, while serving with his Dragon Company unit in a small town in Iraq in 2003. The author met the boy, now nicknamed Steve-O, when he approached the Dragon Company unit soldiers and asked to be arrested. Steve-O explained that he had valuable information about the insurgency and that he wanted to turn in his own father. At the Tattered Cover Book Store in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, First Sergeant Hendrex, and other soldiers in the Dragon Company unit, detail how they worked together in Iraq to fight the insurgency and the challenges they faced protecting Steve-O when they brought him back to the United States.

First Sergeant Daniel Hendrex works in the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Carson. He joined the army in 1990 and has served in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Desert Shield, Continue Hope, Intrinsic Action, Joint Forge, Joint Guardian, Noble Eagle and Iraqi Freedom I and III.
