A couple of possibilitites come to mind: Another LIHOP or MIHOP attack on US soil. Or reasonable gamble that the world economy will crash at the end of a short fast domino chain after nuking Iran. The "situation demands that for your own safety I must continue in charge." Martial law or otherwise. I do believe it's possible. Not just for the power. These people know now that they have the extreme penalty to pay if they lose power and are tried and brought to justice. The potential of the death penalty for war crimes would be a powerful motivator to maintain absolute power.
