It's also possible that Karr, who was facing...a potential...sentence in a Thai prison, told the police that he was involved in the case in order to escape the justice in Thailand, with full knowledge that he would be sent back to the US...

Yep--this could simply be a scam. Child predators are smart that way--smart enough to leave the country, and smart enough to know when one country's justice system is preferable to another's!
