West Virginia Board of Education v. Barnette
Students who were Jehovah’s Witnesses won the right to refuse to salute the flag. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a compulsory flag salute is a violation of the rights of all persons - including students - to freedom of expression. More recent cases have upheld the right of students to remain in the classroom, seated quietly, during the recitation of the pledge of allegiance to the flag.
