From Irumbuchola, for peace in Lebanon

Abdul Latheef Naha

SEEKING PEACE: Children of A.U.P. School posting letters to Israel's Ambassador in New Delhi, David Danieli.

MALAPPURAM: A primary school in a remote village of Malappuram district is observing an `anti-war week' even as Israel continues to pound targets in Lebanon and Gaza.

The children of A.U.P. School at Irumbuchola in A.R. Nagar panchayat have written to Israel's Ambassador in New Delhi, David Danieli, pleading him to end the battles in Lebanon and Gaza.

In the letters sent en mass, the children wrote: "Your Excellency, can you insist to stop killings of our friends of West Asia?... with hot tears."

When hundreds of children approached the nearest mail box to post their letters in an orderly fashion, local residents watched in curiosity and appreciation. "Our kids are doing what we didn't think of," said one of them.

Besides raising anti-war slogans on the campus, the children flew 1,000 Sadako paper cranes with peace written on their wings. "This is our cry; this is our prayer: Peace in the world," the children said, remembering Sadako Sasaki, the Japanese girl who taught the world how peace was important through her symbolic paper cranes.

It also gave children an opportunity to learn what Sadako did for world peace. Their teachers explained to them not only about Sadako but about folded paper cranes as well.
