Support for Lebanon's 7-point plan

AMMAN -- Lebanon's al-Anwar commented Thursday that Israel's war on Lebanon entered its fifth week with more complications for Lebanon as the war expands and the diplomatic battle contracts. The daily said Israel has decided to expand its ground operations and continues to destroy Lebanon from the air and sea, while the consultations in the U.N. Security Council are facing obstacles with little hope the Arabs can manage to amend a French-American draft resolution.

The United Arab Emirates' al-Khaleej said in its editorial there have been no indications from Arab countries of an alternative if their diplomatic efforts fail in amending a U.S.-French draft resolution. The pro-government daily complained there were no signs the United States, Israel and Britain would listen to the rest of the international community, let alone the Arabs, to stop the "triple aggression" on Lebanon. It said America is stalling and prolonging the aggression until "its Israeli arm achieves its mission in killing Lebanon's state, land, people and resistance," adding that the war was first extended to days and then weeks, and now there is talk about another month or more.

"What are they waiting for? To double the statistics of death, injuries, destruction and the displaced, and to let the Lebanese people surrender to the Zionist terrorism and American chaos?" it asked. The paper said it was time for the Arab voice to be heard and to have an effect in the world, especially against the "war criminals in the Zionist entity who are committing the massacres of the century."

Oman's al-Watan remarked that U.S. smart bombs continue to strike Lebanon while the Security Council continues discussions to allow a last chance for "killing the spirit of steadfastness and resistance." The pro-government daily thanked the Arabs who met in Beirut and dispatched a delegation to speak at the United Nations, saying no one seems to be in a hurry to stop the Israeli onslaught on Lebanon, while President George W. Bush is spending his vacation in his Texas ranch "with his cows" and British Prime Minister Tony Blair is spending a three-week holiday in the Bahamas.

It accused the Israeli U.N. ambassador of lying like his government, saying he has no shame to use the international forum to lie and asked "if these people will provide peace and security for the Lebanese people." The commentary said many Israelis left their towns in northern Israel to return to their "original countries as they realized the delusions of democracy and safety promoted by the Zionist ideas in Israel." It said the Israeli deaths in northern Israel and southern Lebanon were victims of the "fascist politicians who adopt insane, racist ideas, and behind them is (Secretary of State) Condoleezza Rice."
