If you're not ready to go that far, you won't kill the empire. Division, class, top-down social structure, etc, comes with agriculture. You won't kill the empire by using the empire. You won't kill the empire by keeping the state. You won't kill the empire by only trying to reform trade organizations. To attempt such a project while using the existing structure, you will end up having to use force, which is how the organizations of empire came to exist, and continue to exist. And a "Global Society" would mean more empire organizations.
