Kill the Indian, Save the Man: The Genocidal Impact of American Indian Residential Schools

Ward Churchill talks about the history of government-created American Indian residential schools and argues that these schools had genocidal aims. Professor Churchill says that while the term "genocide" is widely understood to refer only to the mass killing of one or another ethinic group, the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide defines it in broader terms which apply to the policies of the U.S. government towards Native American children throughout much of the 20th Century. He describes the treatment that these children received and discusses the impact of these schools on Native American society today. The talk was hosted by City Lights Booksellers in San Francisco. Ward Churchill is a professor of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado - Boulder. He is the author of many books, including "A Little Matter of Genocide," "Since Predator Came," and "Fantasies of the Master Race."
