That's the music I love, though I don't consider it to be 'metal'--even though that's what it was called; anything hard was referred to as metal back then--I consider it hard rock. I used to write for a local rock magazine back in the day and I wrote about lots of those bands. My favorite band in the genre is a short-lived band called Cats In Boots. Are you familiar with them?

I liked some of the old school metal, though not as much as the hard rock. As for today's metal, I haven't liked what I've heard. I can't stand the so-called vocals in much of it. The singing is an important element of the song to me, and whatever they're doing isn't singing, nor is it pleasant to hear. Like you, I need some melody in my songs, though I never liked the hair bands that were too poppy (Poison, Warrant, etc.). Which 'hair bands' do you like?
