Except I don't really believe in conspiracies: I believe in facts.

FACT 1: It is impossible to have a democracy when the vote is counted in total secrecy without verification

FACT 2: About 80% (and probably more) of the vote in American is counted in total secrecy without verification or adequate verification.

FACT 3: EVMs are "trivially easy" to hack, patch, mis-program, maliciously program, etc. and if any of these happen, it's next to impossible to find out since there's no verification (see Fact 2).

FACT 4: A certain percentage of human beings in all races and all countries will cheat if given the chance to advance their own causes or pad their pocketbooks, especially if there's almost no chance of getting caught (see Facts 1 & 2). Ergo, these EVMs have almost certainly been maliciously programmed in the past and will continue to be so programmed as long as human beings do the programming.
