Discrimination against gays alive and kicking in the 'liberal' world

Let's say that California had a referendum banning any of the following categories of people from marrying:

Catholics marrying Jews

Blacks marrying Whites

Irish marrying Italians

Fat people marrying thin people

Disabled people marrying non-disabled people...

Now, lets suppose that any of these initiatives passed and it was up to the Obama department of justice to defend the law. What do you think the response would be, say, if the blacks not marrying whites option passed? Do you think Pres Obama would get away with saying that the justice department has a protocol it must follow and defend the legislation?

Or, do you think he might get on television and say that this is horrible discrimination that he will not let his administration sanction and act in any capacity he could to expose and stop the discrimination?

Do you think he might bring in his constitutional knowledge and publicly state that the opinion of the many can't be used to deny rights to the few? Maybe an impassioned speech threading laws and ruling and the history of oppression on prime time?

The issue to me on the Obama White House is the utter lack of courage on this topic. Discrimination against the gay and lesbian community is explained away by technicalities of law instead of a impassioned stance of protecting the rights of all Americans. Even worse is the 'liberals' and 'progressives' rationalizing the administration's insulting DOJ as unrelated to Obama...He can't insert himself...

Would anyone say the same on this board, if was another group...

Blacks and whites

Short and tall

Irish and Italian...

No. Those bannings would be an outrage. But, the rights of gay individuals to marry still is accepted as a matter of acceptable public debate.

It is easy to show 'courage of conviction' when the popular tide supports that conviction. Not so much when the conviction actually requires true courage.

Obama needs to publicly state that gay marriage should be as much of an inherent right as any hetrosexual union. And, if those who would defend Obama backing down from this challenge because it is not politically expedient should hang up their badge as a liberal or progressive.
