They fell in love with Shrub, probably based largely on his fake "regular guy" persona and his being a born-again Christian. Gore came close in WV, but Kerry was beaten pretty soundly. The sad thing is that WV used to be pretty solidly in the Democratic base; they even voted for Dukakis in '88.

The last election that those states went for the Democratic presidential candidate was Clinton in '96.
