<Forget soccer moms and NASCAR dads.

This election year, the political scientists are noodling around single women.

Both Bush and his Democratic challenger, John Kerry, recognize the potential and are reaching out to register single women and to urge them to the polls. The Bush-Cheney team has organized a "W Stands for Women" effort, while Kerry's campaign has formed "Women for Kerry."

In the latest New York Times/CBS News poll, single women favored Kerry by 21 points over Bush. Other polls have shown different numbers but still have Kerry in the lead.

And they're seriously hacked off with Washington and want change. They don't like the Iraq war, tax policies that favor married couples or the lack of affordable health care.

But while single women can't be pigeonholed, they do have some things in common. One key finding is that unmarried women, regardless of their age, ethnicity, income or other circumstances, when asked what group they most closely identified with (religious, ethnic group, etc.), almost unanimously said they identify with other unmarried women first. While it appears the group is strikingly diverse, the surveys also found common ground on which to appeal. Several areas on which all the women surveyed agreed was personal safety, affordable health care, the economy and pay equity. Women still earn 77 cents for every $1 earned by men.>
