15. Thompson failed on his own--he had the excitement and support behind him, but
sleep-walked through his own campaign. Had he taken off, the Freeps would have been orgasmic--even now, they still support him. I will give the Freeps credit--they are generally pretty well-informed on issues and candidates, even if I find their views abhorrent. I don't actually think they're "fringe right" extremists the way they are painted--they're actually not too far from typical GOPer-on-the-street mentality. That's why I think they're a pretty good gauge of a candidate's eventual support.
